Tips for Starting School

The first day of school can come with so many emotions for both you and your child. Excitement, anticipation, nervousness, and maybe even a little bit of sadness. We have all been there, and completely understand. For the parents, we have a “Tears and Cheers” table on the first day. For your children, we will be ready with a reassuring smile and a hug if needed. Read below for some tips on having a great first day of school!

*Share your excitement for the starting of school with your child. It’s ok to say you will miss them, but follow up with “I know you are going to have so much fun, and I am so excited to hear all about your day when I pick you up!”

*Before school starts, ask you child what they think they will do at school. Talk about friends they will meet, even ask them what they think their new teacher is doing to get ready. Don’t be surprised if your child thinks we live at school!

*If your child is nervous about starting school/leaving you, start talking about what your child can do to feel better when they miss you. Maybe draw a heart with marker on their arm and yours. (Best to avoid the hand, so the special reminder doesn’t wash off when we wash hands.) When they start missing you they can touch the heart and know you are also touching yours. The same can be done with a matching necklace or bracelet. These can even be homemade!

*When the actual morning gets here, be excited! Take the pictures! Reassure them they will have so much fun at school. Their teacher will help them, and you will be back to pick them up when school is over. When it is time to go to class, a quick hug and wave goodbye is best. If your child is teary, we all know it can be hard on mama hearts. Trust the teachers and staff. We will love your children and take care of them. Once moms and dads are out of sight, and we are in the room singing and starting our day, usually, the tears go away pretty quickly.

We are honored that you chose our school for your child! We can’t wait to start our year!
